Bush Betrayals Begin, Get Used To It
Boulder, CO - The America First Party is deeply disappointed, but not
surprised, by the choice made by President Bush in nominating Alberto
Gonzales to replace outgoing Attorney General John Ashcroft. Every
American who is pro-life, anti-discrimination, and anti-torture should
be outraged by this nomination.
National Chair Dan Charles stated, "Eighty percent of voters for whom
'moral values' was the most important issue voted for President
Bush. Yet in his first official act since the election, President Bush
has betrayed those more than twenty million Americans by nominating
Alberto Gonzales for Attorney General. Without their votes, he would
not have been reelected. Nobody should be shocked by this
unfaithfulness--bait-and-switch is the Republican mode of
operation. This is why the America First Party encouraged voters of
good conscience to cast their vote elsewhere."
Mr. Charles continued, "Alberto Gonzales always finds a way to support
moral decay and ever more power for the government. His vote on the
Texas Supreme Court nullified that state's Parental Notification Act,
stripping lawful parental rights and supporting abortion as a form of
birth control. He found a way to justify torture and limit the
protection of both the Geneva Convention for battlefield combatants and
the Bill of Rights for American citizens when it suited the interests
of the Government. Mr. Gonzales and President Bush abandoned principle
in favor of racial discrimination, rather than merit, by public
schools. Because of Mr. Gonzales, our government continues to embrace
'the soft bigotry of low expectations', to quote the President."
Expressing the outrage of many around the country, National Secretary
John Pittman Hey added, "Thanks to Mr. Gonzales, babies are being
butchered that otherwise would have been saved, citizens are held in
secret jails without any notice to their loved ones, and students are
denied admission to school because they are the 'wrong' color. Hasn't
Mr. Gonzales done enough to trample the Constitution and promote
obscene and un-American policies? Hasn't he hurt enough people
already? Apparently not. He's just the type crony George Bush wants to
keep around, helping further his vision of "compassionate conservatism"
in Washington. Too bad we don't have a President with the moral decency
to kick Alberto Gonzales out of Government entirely and send him
packing back to Houston where he belongs."
Mr. Charles concluded, "The Bush betrayal of our Constitution and the
bedrock values of people of faith should surprise no one. We got a
taste of it when the last Attorney General was forced to declare a US
Supreme Court opinion, 'settled law'. Those who were surprised should
get used to the feeling. Actions speak louder than the words in any
stump speech."
